Aside

Why I don’t do outfit posts (an illustrated explanation)

-  I think my best photo is one of me high-fiving myself.

- I don’t have an amazingly tidy, big, vintage home.
- I don’t have a garden with great autumn colours.
- And I don’t live close to a fairytale forest.
- Or dramatic cliffs.
- Or the coast.
- Or the mountains.
- I also don’t have a hot husband. Or a hipster husband. Or a husband at all.
- I don’t have cute babies.
- I’d rather spend my money on books, trips and records than clothes.
- I feel too comfortable in jeans and a band t-shirt.
- I don’t call people “darling”
- I almost always wear trainers.
- I don’t feel comfortable posing and would never strike the model-like poses that can be seen in lots of blogs.

- I buy too much stuff from H&M.

  • Cut off jeans – H&M (5 years old)
  • Shirt – H&M (3 years old)
  • Grown Ups t-shirt – Stolen from Cliff, never to be returned.
  • Scarf – H&M (4 years old)
  • Leggings – New Look (involuntarily customised by me and a sharp object)
  • Shoes – Vans (couple of years old, present from my mum)
  • Pendant – Oysho

    >I <3 this post! I mentioned my love for cheap jeans+tank tops being a very big reason why I don't do these posts, either. That, and books last a lot longer than dresses.

  • Alexa

    >This was beyond perfect, especially the "I don't live close to a fairytale forest."

  • Katyha

    >I love this post!! well said too. I don't have many of those things and to be honest those blogs get boring.

  • ana

    >& i love this post :D hah. i think that high-5ing photo of you is pretty awesome.

  • Nicola

    >Yes, but I love your green wall and books and wicker ottoman/blanket box thingy.

  • Allie

    >Haha, I don't take outfit photos for a lot of the same reasons! And honestly, I'd rather read about the bloggers themselves, and less about the clothes they have on/where they got them.

    Kudos on this post!

  • Bianca J

    >I feel very much the same! :D
I would enjoy seeing more of your outfit posts like this one, ha.

  • andrea

    >I am amazed at how this post got you all commenting hahaha.

I follow blogs that do outfit posts, ones that I dont mind who have their own style and great content, but most really irritate me. They just seem really superficial and sort of fake, like their day is planned around taking outfit photos or something.

  • andrea

    >Bianca, maybe I'll start an anti-fashion blog and only post when I'm wearing jeans and band tshirts

  • Nat

    >This is the first time I've visited The Art of Staying Up All Night – found you through Pugly Pixel – and as a result of this HILARIOUS post, I'll certainly be returning.

Not that I don't love plenty of bloggers who use their husbands (given cutesy nicknames) and/or babies as blogging accessories, but…..this is a much needed, refreshing perspective!

  • Moe

    >Agreed! Nor am I photogenic! But, from glimpses of your home, I think it's pretty neat!

Great job capturing your whole self….usually I can't even get that!!

    love this post!

  • Itchin’ Stitchin’

    >Your too funny!!! I don't take outfit posts only because I hate pictures of myself …and really who would care what I am wearing.

  • starcakeastrology.blogspot.com

    >lol! lmao actually!

  • Krystal

    >BUT you rock. these are so fun :) More fashion blogs should take after yours ;)

  • Shelley

    >ahahahahahaha! this is great, i so needed this!

  • alovelylittleworld

    >I read on twitter that this post is your most popular post, and I see why. It's hilarious!
(I'm also a big ancient H&M clothes fan!!!)

  • Clare B

    >I laughed out loud when I read your post. All of it so well said. Plus there's the added problem of self-portrait photography. I always wonder "who took those photos??!"

  • Erica Fustero

    >that's why I started that all what I didn't wore today thing lol
(but you should keep doing posts like this)

  • TheRainWillRemain

    >gracias por pasarte!:)

  • Celeste

    >hahahahaha I LOVE this post! every single thing about it.

  • Sophie

    >This is a good thing. I've often wondered whether to post about the incredible interest I have in fashion and material possessions.. it's a cop out. It's a quick and easy way to get people to follow your blog; it's much more difficult (and rewarding) to build a blog on what you have made, designed or created yourself rather than the things you have bought..

  • andrea

    >@Nat welcome aboard! I'm glad this post made you stay :)

@Moe it's actually my parents' flat (see? I don't even have my own?!) but it does NEED to be blogged about. Stay tuned.

@Krystal Maybe I should start an anti-fashion ring where we can all show how unfashionable we are, it'd be a success.

@Clare B I imagine people walking around with a tripod and standing in crowded streets while shooting themselves and it gives me the giggles. Some people do an amazing job at it and I enjoy seeing good photography more than the clothes really. I think it'S a skill :)

@Sophie I enjoy looking at blogs with SOME stuff about fashion and material possessions. I like sharing new things when I'm proud of my finds and I also like sharing my favourite things. I do not like blogs whose only purpose is to focus on material things, though. There's a difference. Maybe you should start sharing and see how it goes? But I agree, it's a lot harder to build a blog on your own original material. So many blogs are just really REBLOG blogs, which I really don't like. I like inspiration blogs when they are active online and look for stuff that hasn't been posted on other blogs, not when they just take stuff off apartment therapy! Ironically, those blogs seem to be very popular.

    @Erica I already have some ideas :)

  • Bonitta

    >you're lovely, even with your broken jeans. Hahahahaha. Who loves Andrea S.???? WE DOOOOOOOOO

  • aDeLiNe

    >Words can tell how much I enjoy reading this :)

  • itziar

    >jeje. pues a mí me han gustado tus outfit pics: los encuentro bastante más realistas que el acantilado y el bosque de cuento de hadas… y, me lo explique, ¿qué tiene de malo H&M??? ;o)

  • Erika

    >hilarious post. this is the same reason i don't do outfit posts. i appreciate people with a good sense of style, but most of the outfit posts i come across are all the same. i think having a good sense of style can mean many different things. outfit posts have almost made me hate the word vintage. just because you bought it at a thrift store doesn't mean it's actually vintage.

  • Mary Lou (not really a pseudonym)

    >I can't believe no one has mentioned the amazing shade of blue in that wall behind you… now you have a place where to pose!

  • Vagabondiana

    >Wondrous x

  • that kate

    >So good!

  • Holly Knitlightly

    >Hahahahahah! I definitely LOLed at this post!! I think I would be terrible at outfit posts too. I can't given pose for a normal photo, let alone pose for a photo so everyone can check out every detail of what I'm wearing.

  • Aramar

    >This post made me laugh like crazy! I also have that "cute" little problem with many of my jeans…

Loved your blog and thanks for the comment on mine :D
